He is said to have received telephone threats from supporters of Prabhu asking him not to report the matter to the police. Woman who married AIADMK MLA was not kidnapped, says Madras High Court
Although Kallakurichi MLA A. Prabhu and his wife Soundarya said it was not coercion, his father filed a petition with the Supreme Court.
New Delhi: The Madras Supreme Court on Friday allowed AIADMK MLA of Kallakurichi A. Prabhu to go with his wife Soundarya, saying that the latter’s father’s claim that she was “abducted” is incorrect.
The 19-year-old woman is an adult and has willingly made up her mind to marry the 35-year-old lawmaker, according to The News Minute.
Earlier this week, Soundarya’s father Swaminathan alleged that his daughter had been “kidnapped” and that he had received death threats from the ruling party. Swaminathan had claimed that his objection to the couple’s marriage was not due to Prabhu’s caste but to the age difference: Soundarya is 19 years old and Prabhu is 35 years old.
According to The News Minute, Soundarya came to court with her husband on Friday, telling the bank of Justices M.M. Sundaresh and Krishnakumar that no one forced them to marry. She told the court that she and Prabhu are in love and have voluntarily decided to get married.
The court ruled in favor of the couple, saying that since Soundarya is an adult, it was “her turn to take a call to proceed with her husband” and closed the case.
The couple was married on Monday morning when Swaminathan arrived at Prabhu’s house and threatened to burn himself in protest, according to a report on News Minute He poured flammable liquid over himself and said Soundarya had been kidnapped by the MLA.
The police blocked him and an FIR was filed against Swaminathan, a temple priest by profession, for trying to die by suicide.
A New Indian Express report said Swaminathan had received threats from supporters of the ruling party’s MLA asking him not to report the incident to the police.
The TNM report cited local reports in which Swaminathan claimed Prabhu had been a family friend for 15 years and had been in a relationship with his daughter for the past four years since he was a minor.
However, Prabhu denied the claim. He and his wife posted a video in which Prabhu said the couple had only been in a relationship for four months. He also denied claims that he abducted Soundarya, adding that they refused when he turned to his wife’s family for permission to marry them.
In a separate video, Soundarya said she was neither kidnapped nor threatened to participate in the marriage.
S Soundarya, wife of MP #AIADMK from Kallakurichi, says she was neither jeopardized nor kidnapped by legislature. “I married him on my own. The wedding happened with my permission,” she says in the video.
His father alleged that Prabhu had kidnapped Soundarya.
The practice of filing kidnapping or abduction cases when an inter-caste couple marries against the will of the family is considered a pressure tactic. In 2013, the Center informed the Supreme Court that it was against filing an FIR in such cases before taking the woman’s point of view.
